Breaking the Ice – Festivities around celebrating the holiday season across the world
Candlelight, hot chocolate, Christmas decorations, yes, it is that time of the year! Winter season is upon us! Whether you celebrate under a Christmas tree, by the Menorah, or under a Palm tree, one thing is for sure: this season celebrates the love we share for our friends, families, and loved ones. Whether you celebrate in the smoldering heat or the freezing cold, let’s take a closer look at the different ways countries enjoy the festive season around the globe!
Harbin Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival in China
Yes, those are real-life hand-crafted ice sculptures (like actually)! This annual Ice Festival is one of the most exciting and unique things to do in China. Well-known and experienced ice sculptures from around the country come together to create this breathtaking winter wonderland. Besides looking at amazing sculptures, people can also have a stimulating experience with the various snow slides, sledding, skating, and snowmen that are placed at the location. Although your hands will surely be cold, you will leave with a warm heart. This event will take place from December 23rd 2021 to February 28th 2022.
Karnaval in Curaçao
Although Curacao doesn’t technically experience the effects of winter (aka cold weather and snow), ‘’Karnaval’’ is one of Curaçao’s biggest annual event that takes place in winter time. This is where locals come together with their families and friends to watch and enjoy the colorful and creative costumes of the participants. This event is filled with great food, great music, and great ambience. Strangers dance together, happily talk to each other; some even join the parade to dance with the participants. Some would say that it’s a good way to break the ice! Carnivals are events that mostly happen in the warmer countries and can be compared with the ones in Trinidad and Brazil. The event usually takes place in February, which is just the right time to finish the winter season.
Amsterdam Light Festival
The Light Festival is something that both locals and tourists look forward to in Amsterdam. This is where experienced and well-respected light artists come together to create some of the most breathtaking and amazing light ‘ideas’ at the romantic canals of Amsterdam. This event is held in December and January. So even if you’ve missed it during December, it would be the icing on the cake to still experience the installations after the holiday season. Hurry, it ends on the 23 of January 2022.
And of course …Christmas and New Year
We could advise you to visit Copenhagen on Saint Lucia Day, the Winterlights Festival in Luxembourg City or meeting Santa in Rovaniemi. But, most likely we’ll be spending Christmas 2021 with a small circle of loved ones (the size of your circle depends very much on local pandemic measures). But hey…Tis the Season! We hope you can have family gatherings, gifts giving, good food and Christmas decorations. Happy holidays to everyone from the ELM Team!
