See First: Your Career Options

Have you seen the ‘See First’ function in Facebook already? (Ironically, it has not been made very visible to the users yet…) In short, it allows you to decide which posts you want to see at the top of your News Feed, be it coming from your friends or pages that you’ve liked.

The benefit: the way we look at it, the jolly ‘See First’ crab could arrangeprioritize and rearrange the posts to suit your current needs. That’s right, the possibility to choose what you want to see when you log-in does not have to be a permanent decision – social media is way too dynamic to commit to a certain type of content forever! So cherry-pick what you want to see first at the moment.

Where to find ‘See First’

Looking for that perfect wedding dress? – see first the boutiques, fashion magazines and style bloggers. You’re reconsidering your diet made of gummy bears? – see first healthy food bloggers, lifestyle magazines and sports pages. But what if you’re planning to make the next (or perhaps the first) step in your career? Here are a few ways you can optimise the news crab to help you:

  • See first: country. If you’re thinking about an international career, check out the specific country profile of your desired destination as well as the general experiences of people who moved for work. Examples: Travel and expat blogs, Facebook groups for internationals in that country.
  • See first: industry. Stay up to date with the industry developments as well as the ‘nuts and bolts’ shared by the professionals. Examples: follow industry leaders, webizines covering business news in that area as well as prominent companies.
  • See first: company. That goes without saying: if you want to work there, make sure you’re aware of the latest activities, press releases and products! Examples: well, the company page… But also check to see if they have sister companies or pages for the different departments.
  • See first: careers advice. Don’t underestimate the importance of self-presentation, polish everything from your CV to an elevator pitch. Examples: career services, Facebook groups focused on topics of international careers, professional advisers.

This way even if you log-in to Facebook to procrastinate a little, you will still see information that is most relevant to you right now.
